I'm working on a LEED-certified building. Can I get credit for using Urbanwood?
Urbanwood is definitely a green product, suitable for any goal of sustainability. However, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System's materials and resources category currently only recognizes wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC certification is only used for products that come from forests with sustainably managed timber. Since Urbanwood is a reclaimed product, made from trees that were not harvested for timber, it does not qualify. We hope that LEED will soon realize that they are missing an excellent opportunity to promote reclaimed wood as another sustainable wood option.
In the meantime, there are a few ways to possibly still obtain LEED credits by using Urbanwood. Be sure to consult a LEED Accredited Professional as to whether your Urbanwood products can qualify for credits as recycled content, regional materials, or innovative design.
